Shopping for a cocktail dress is both fun and frustrating. It’s fun to see all the Fall arrivals and pick out new favourites, but it’s frustrating to realize in the fitting room that what you loved on the hanger does nothing for you. End the heartache with our Fall figure-loving tips for every shape.

Fabulous for Pear Shape Body Types

Pear: This incredible sheath from Lyman (68103U) is a clever choice. The cutouts around the shoulders accentuate slender shoulders and keep the interest up top without resorting to a distracting skirt. Iridescent trim and another pair of cutouts effortlessly create a trim waist besides adding some sex appeal.

Inverted Triangle: A keyhole neckline elongates your upper body, and gathered fabric can build an hourglass when used well. Find both techniques in this (36046) dress, which looks made for a Triangle. The front ruching will slim out tummy bulges as well.

Frank Lyman Dress

Show off those great shoulders and arms

Rectangular: A peplum is traditionally used to build shape for boxy figures, but we think this jersey drape dress (68001) is more flattering. The tension between the side and the front drape hints at a hidden hourglass figure. Don’t miss the nod to Fall trends with the glittery straps that draw attention upwards towards your face.

We love love the sleekness of this dress

Hourglass: Hourglass-shaped ladies should avoid anything clingy which creates bulk or clutter, but other than that everything looks great on them. Try this long sleeved dress in dramatic, almost-unrelieved black (64001). Only the stylish gold clip on the side breaks up the outline. This is perfect is LBD that should be in all of our closets.
